Evaluation of the Tourism Climate Index in the Canary Islands

In this study, we performed a diagnostic and evolutive analysis of the bioclimatology Canary Islands, an Atlantic archipelago where climate itself is main feature promoting tourism. Among all tourist-climate indices described in literature, evaluated most widely used, which Tourism Climate Index (TCI) proposed by Mieczkowski (1985). Monthly mean TCI time series were calculated using meteorological data from Spanish State Meteorological Agency database European Assessment Dataset. Our results show values greater than 50 during almost every month period 1950–2018, with over entire between 70 80. According to classification scheme, these correspond very good thermal comfort along period. also point spring as season best TCI, maximum around 80 for index April—excellent according classification. However, did not find correlation inbound arrivals index, might lack information available tourists. This opens opportunity policymakers tour operators better publicize seasons holidays islands.
